To compare with a theatrical movie hitting Disney+, Elemental did 26.4 million views in 5 days for Sep 2023 as the most watched premiere of 2023.
Elemental didn't make money doing that. Disney+ would have to prove that Elemental got people to search out Disney+ and subbed for the sole purpose of watching that movie and then that number might mean something. These streaming services are very sneaky and corrupt. Parents stick little Timmy in front of the TV and he watches Disney+ all day. Multiple viewings of content he doesn't understand except he likes the vivid colors. Run Elemental a lot and that's a lot of views from just one viewer or maybe Timmy is napping and nobody is watching. Views still rack up. CNN played that trick for decades. Stick a bunch of TVs in airports all across the country and world with CNN locked on the channel and voila, CNN is "the most trusted name in news" with tons of views.

All that, and of course the elephant in the room is they are still losing billions on Disney+. # of views doesn't mean fuck all when you lose money on every single view.

Disney+ may just be a loss leader kind of thing like XBox is/was. As much as I want all these woke corps to be incompetent and fail, we are still waiting for Disney to fail.

It could be like this to maintain market share and damage competition, anticipating profits in the future or from other revenue streams.

Like if Netflix/Amazon etc collapse and Disney is last one standing, or if kids being sat in front of D+ and being parented by them leads to new Disney adults going to the parks in 20 years time and buying all the merch.

11 billion in the hole and counting. It isn't a loss leader, it is a disaster.

Could be fraudulent accounting to reduce the tax bill too, don't get me wrong though, I'd love to see Disney collapse.

I'm just skeptical since we hear these reports and nothing happens, like how Kathleen Kennedy is supposed to be getting fired every year.

Loss leader for what though? The parks that have been declining for a while?

i really dont want Disney to collapse. i want my old Disney back. the one where a kids movie should have parents getting murdered and beautiful animation with properly portrayed characters tugging at my heartstrings. i was a Pixar fanboy for 20 years. every year on this board i would start all the Pixar movie threads, i paid to see those films in the theater. not anymore. its just trash fire after trash fire. Disney+ was just a stupid fever dream started by Iger to fuck over Netflix. he could have let them do their thing. they were making their own Marvel content and everyone was happy. then Iger cut off Netflix and decided Disney needed their own shitty Marvel TV shows. they clearly dont know what the fuck they're doing if their business model was to turn a profit. they cant even make a proper Doctor Who show, which should be the easiest fucking thing to do since the show ran for decades on a budget of a fiver and a packet of crisps.

Sooo, this is very pretty, high production values and good choreography.

But.

I just can't get over how dumb it is, in almost every bit of dialogue.

"You match the description of a suspect" - this is a galactic federation of hundreds of planets, and someone *recognised her* from a fucking *description* ?! This like LAPD listening to the description of someone in a bar fight and going 'You know, that sounds a lot like a fisherman I know of in east timor, we should go there and take them in for questioning', only it's a million times worse.

Forget consistency with existing lore, this show doesn't have consistency from episode to episode, it doesn't have consistency within the same episode, it doesn't even have consistency within the *same fucking sentence*. I kid you not - there are gems like 'News of this can't get out, we need to make an example of her'.

Some other great efforts :
"A jedi never draws their weapon unless they mean to kill" ( Or show it to someone, or open a door, or cut someone's hand off, or show they are serious, or to look cool, or just, like, because )
"You can't kill a jedi with steel" ( Unless, apparently, it is *sharp* steel, that's a whole 'nother thing )
This shit is why I'm not excited the upcoming Mandoverse seasons. It's like it was written by someone deep in a fever dream. Compare that with Andor where most everything fits cleanly even upon close inspection.

it took disney 5 days to post numbers for Ahsoka (14m views after 5 days) so no idea how this compares tbh

apples to oranges, mins to views, so i don't know

"Disney+’s Ahsoka debuted at No. 2 on Nielsen’s latest U.S. ranking of streaming originals.
The Mandalorian offshoot — with its double-episode, Tuesday-night premiere — racked up 829 million minutes viewed for the week of Monday, Aug. 21. Ashoka thus bested Andor‘s triple-episode debut (which last September garnered 624 million minutes viewed in its first week) and The Mandalorian Season 3’s opening week (823 million minutes), yet fell well shy of Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s double-episode premiere (1.03 billion minutes)"

Ahsoka 2 episodes = 97 mins so 829m mins would be like 8.5m full views (?). guess will have to wait a while till nelson puts out their chart

anyway, 4.8m viewers for 2 episodes is sorta shit, well used to be.

The writers insistance on making most of these so spatially small completely turds on the greatest potential of a series like star wars. Galaxies are huge, and really you could have billions of planets, stories, races, lores to pull from. You could explore and have fun with so many ideas like that.

Instead, the writers basically chosen instead to make the galaxy incredibly tiny. Need to get to the other side? That'll be a 5 min space ride. I gotta put more effort into going to the grocery store on the other side of my small town than they do to show up at even the most exotic locations. It's incredibly stupid, especially since the best character building tends to happen when characters are bored and fuck around.

Maybe modern writers, always on their phone, just haven't ever experienced having to fuck around to fill time? It's really fucking weird tbh.

If by "watching it" you mean throwing popcorn in the air and catching it like a boss while watching Disney burn stock dollars, and their castle, to the ground... then, yep!

This is exactly how it will end, and they even telegraphed who the sith is. They couldn't even pinch out an original story. Jedi master trains padawan, padawan goes nuts and joins the dark side and then gets saved in the end before dying.

I feel we have seen this at least once before.
Who is the padawan? The girl doing the killing was left for dead by the jedi.

First episode was some fucking hack writing. I especially enjoyed the space fire, which was obviously liquid oxygen burning off that happens to be stored just below the fuselage. Right? Good thing the space fire extinguisher is rated for liquid oxygen fires in space. I wonder which leg of the fire triangle that extinguisher was removing. Heat? Oxygen? Fuel?

Maybe they should have stuck closer to "The Fugitive" formula. The second episode wasn't so hacky, but the idiotic titles make me worry that's a fluke.

Bored as usual, so I actually thought about who the secret Sith is supposed to be. It might be the green dyke or its that moron Jedi who was friends with OSHA. He said he was watching her the whole time, but he was nowhere to be found in that scene. He was also a new Jedi, so he doesn't have many years of being a Jedi to establish himself.

It's even better, it's not actually a fire extinguisher, she puts it out with her pocket robot, which is apparently also a screwdriver and a welding tool.

Her pocket robot is also a recording device as well as a computer she was using to hack into the Jedi's space ship. Basically R2D2, but too small for any dwarfs to operate. Disney is anti dwarf employment now.
