It isn't always successful though, that's what I mean. No doctor can guarantee that the reversal will work, especially if a lot of time has passed. It is a more extensive procedure, there are risks.

I understand that there are risks in any elective surgery it just seems like 21 is really young to be making a decision about whether you may or may not want to have children 20 years down the road.

I would assume it is difficult to find an ethical doctor who would do that procedure on a 21 year old. My wife had serious issues with her pregnancies and even then they were hesitant to tie her tubes at 24.

My bud had the same experience. He inquired about it when he was having some issues with his balls from riding his bike and seeing a specialist, and was told that the doctor wouldn't consider doing a vasectomy on him due to his age and marital status (single). It's not 100% guaranteed to be reversible, and if anything, not doing the procedure can also shield them from liability of a patient suing them 10 years later when they changed their mind and decided they wanted to have kids after all.

Makes perfect sense to me.

The bottom line is that it is a major surgery for her and an outpatient procedure for you. She could die.
This. My mother had a rough go of it, but my stepdad still had his swimmers so it's all good!

I'd get snipped w/o a second thought, if it came down to being snipped or putting it off on a woman.

My two cents: I didn't have any complications. Other than it feeling like the doc was yanking on my guts during the cut; it wasn't bad at all. The wound healed quickly and the only thing I fucked up on was taking my jock strap off too soon. I tried to run and it felt like someone was kicking me in the sack.

Other than that, no issues. I'd only wish I had done it sooner. Child support is a motherfucker.

Thanks, and yeah, I could have googled it by my self, but then what's the point in having Internet forums where you can chat with people about these things?

1) Yep. That's exactly what it does.
2) Nope, your pee pee still works.
3) You just shoot blanks.
4) It goes the same place it always goes. Your balls are producing spermies 24/7, and recycling spermies 24/7. It's the entire circle of life right down there in your nads.
5) Sperm production continues. Over time the body adjusts to produce less -- but this happens naturally even without obstructing the duct.

Your balls don't actually care that much how often you shoot. They're gonna do what they do because that's what they do. They've got a quota to fill, and they ain't paid to work no overtime.
Thanks for taking the time to write that great answer!

People who've had vasectomies tend to develop these large versions of these things called 'spermatoceles' near their testes, which I am not totally sure of the mechanism but is probably related to the vas ligation. They are quite common even in a normal population, but tend to be larger and more numerous, and thus more likely to be felt as some kind of scrotal lump in a post-vasectomy patient. I am not sure if they are known to cause any symptoms/pain though, outside of maybe some mental discomfort from their presence.
And thanks to you too! Never heard of those before.

Vandyn, what type of hernia did you have repaired?

I have had both right and left inguinal hernia repairs (not at the same time, however). A vasectomy is not even within the same realm as those, both in terms of recovery and performance related side effects. As many others have mentioned, the vasectomy typically has some very light lingering pain with potentially moderate swelling. Nothing that some anti-inflammatories and a bag of frozen peas won't take care of. I was on my feet and back to normal the next day. No performance side effects whatsoever.

Compared to recovery from the hernia repair(s): more downtime, "real" pain as opposed to "nuisance" pain that took hard painkillers to manage, and an extended period of time before resuming anything that I would consider normal activity. Performance related side effects? Before, I could have been a Peter North stand in. After, there is ZERO horsepower. It's a tragic fate.

TLDR: The two aren't even in the same ballpark, in my experience. Hope this helps.
Thanks man, that's what I wanted to know. Puts my mind at ease a little more. Mine was left and right inguinalat the same time. Needless to say is wasn't pleasant after the fact and perhaps colors my outlook a little on any type of surgery.

I had mine at 24. The procedure it self was ok, but i went back to work (construction) to soon and injured myself by doing to much physical activity.

We were asked if my wife wanted her tubes tied in the event they had to do a c-section to deliver my daughter. Apparently it's a "while we're in there..." kind of thing. Had to sign a form and all that. She delivered naturally though so never came up.

Holy hell, I can't imagine getting both sides done at the same time. If you can do that, you can do anything!

Lol, I posted a clothed pic, not a tits pic. Had to add the tits comment for good measure though. Must poke fun at Trexxy when possible.

And now back on topic.

Do you guys think 28/30 is still too young for a decision like that?
If your worried about, just have a sample stored up just in case you change your mind down the road.

How old were you guys when you had this done and how many kids? I'm 28, husband is 30 and we have 3 kids. We're done at this point but he doesn't want to. How do I convince him, or even get him to talk about it?
Use birth control.

Had mine done nearly 10 years ago. Working in healthcare, I had the Urologist do it after hours in his clinic. Procedure was fine, but I moved around too much post op. Also developed a small granuloma (collection of semen that leaks through the incision that forms a small cyst), that had to be taken care of. Manually....with his fucking hands. He said "is this what you feel?" Before I could answer he just squeezed the shit out of it and I hit the fucking ground. With a handful of his hair as he was kneeling down in front of me to assess the situation.

Granulomas feel like concentrated, persistent kicks in the sack. Terrible and common side effects. I almost wish someone, even me, had crushed them ASAP so they didn't stick around until reabsorption.

Outpatient surgery, so no big deal?

Had mine snipped when I was 21, best decision ever, I had too sign all kind of waiver's, but I've never wanted kids anyway.

It's been 12 years, sense then I haven't had any discomfort in that time.

So what's the recovery period? Days? Weeks? I guess I can just wait and ask doc in a few weeks. My real question is how soon I'll be able to cycle/mountain bike again. From the sound of this thread I want to wait the full recovery time to be certain I don't fuck shit up and cause issues by riding again too soon.

Usually just 3-4 days. I'd wait 10-14 before getting on the bike again. The problem is 99% of folks start moving around too early because there is little to no pain. Then the shit hits the fan.....
