Microcenter knows how to upsell the fuck out of PC's and parts. Fighting them off , and telling them what I wanted, not what they thought I needed. I also had to fix the build they did for me a few years ago.
So it depends on the tech and the parts you want. MC does a great job normally but I have had a shitty tech who didn't want to use the parts I brought for the build when they didn't carry them, RE: Artic AIO coolers. This is the same asshole who when I told him I wanted quiet fans put a bunch of loud ass High performance case fans in my last build. So its a pretty good service but def Trust AND verify, and always power on the system there. I really want one of the new ThermalTake cases but MC doesn't seem to want to stock them and I hesitate to bring them a case they don't supply themselves.
The question is: which 50 series card will match 4090 rendering performance?
[
They started out saying the 5080 would be like the 4090, then the 5070 was going to be like the 4090 but without DLSS 4 multi frame creation what it looks like is the 5000 series is the 4000 series plus 20% in raw raterization.

What price is the 4090 going for these days?
MSRP for the Founders and the basic editions that the AIBs sold a combined 5 of was $1,600. Average price was ~$1,700 for their "OC" editions so they could try to make margins after nVidia fucked them over on GPU costs.

Once the ban on chip density over a certain point was announced in 2024 every single on market 4090 was shipped into China to beat the ban. It became extremely difficult to find one again outside of China.

You're either looking at a prebuilt for a 4090 or a scalped one.

Will the new cards require a new motherboard? My current system has a 3060, but can use a 4070 if I wanted to buy (though it would be cou limited).

Depends. It's mostly PCIe version for proper bandwidth. Not sure if they announced 50 series will be on gen 5 or not.

Otherwise space and power constraints. Some mobos and cases literally can't fit modern GPUs, just because of size or packaging.

These cards should be gen 5 pci, but the spec is backwards compatible down to 4 and 3. 4090s don’t use all of the bandwidth of gen 4 as it is. You’ll be fine with an older system. Just case space constraints are something you need to keep in mind as the coolers get larger and larger.

It's because they get paid commission. If you don't buy the entire build from in-store stuff at MC they pass the word along to backburner the build and drag their feet on it. They price match, so they believe there is no reason anyone should use parts that weren't bought at MC since they are willing to match whatever piece of shit they have available. The reps pressure the build team even though they have nothing to do with the build. They drop parts off to the team and make little comments to them.

When I got my 4090 I didn't start out looking for a 4090, it wasn't on my radar. I came in to get an AMD 7900XT. They didn't bash AMD at all, or make it seem like they were pushing the highest price product, but they chipped away at the idea of an AMD gradually and the 4080 entered the conversation. That's when they made the killshot "Well to get 7900XT VRAM you have to get a 4090" I walked it to the checkout and the cashier immediately said after scanning it "they're really ripping people off with these 4090's" holding it in his hands like it burned to touch, noting it was marked up a full 300+ dollars over MSRP. A year later, they're selling brand new for nearly double what I paid.

NVidia should have stuck with saying the 5080 would be comparable. Even though that's in doubt, it's at least not a complete insult to everyone's collective intelligence. They went too far pushing the 12 gig 5070.

some airflow / design talk about the 5090

DLSS4 does seem better than 3.5 but then again in 2-3 years we'll see DLSS4 on the left side and DLSS5 on the right

These coolers are smaller, I think.

The FE cards, sure, the AIB? Nope, same size or bigger.

The AIBs don't have the ability to amortize their cooler development costs over the silicon they sell to their AIBs like nVidia can. The AIB designs are pretty much the exact coolers they used for the 4000 series GPUs.

I've dinked with ai fps boosters for video a little, and they've been ok-ish, but sometimes the frame-to-frame assumptions are just wrong. Makes me wonder how noticeable the difference would be between 200 real fps would and 50 ai'd to 200. Probably not enough to matter on the vast majority of games, but that probably also means that those games didn't need 200 fps to start with.

Maybe the next step is letting the video card drive game logic so the ai frames are actually "real"? (now that I think about it, that's even more horrifying if you extrapolate it outside of games...)

my question is how many wasted frame % it has, and how many bandwidth the new driver will consume to send this information back to Nvidia for free

it's not really 'software' because there's actual die space used for the chips doing the AI work

NVIDIA has always been better at software compared to ATI/AMD. That's why they're so successful.

Without good GPU drivers your "hardware" is just an expensive door stopper.
