Both the 9070 base and 5070 base are bad buys vs the XT and Ti at the current listed MSRPs.

The 9070XT has tradeoffs vs the 5070Ti (still significantly worse RT performance, worse power efficiency), but the 9070XT will still win at the current listed MSRPs for most buyers.

But note that all these comparisons are relative to MSRPs. Change one price relative to the others via tarriffs / non-reference cards / component increases, and all the conclusions go out the window.

I'd still just buy a 5080... if they were available, listed anywhere near the reference price, and wouldn't burn my PC down. This gen sucks. I honestly wonder how much of that suckitude is still delayed effects of covid - less engineers onsite, less debugging, and more historical demand for higher performance phone chips from the mass market stuck at home with nothing to do but fiddle on their phones.

(And the elephant remains in the room - a PS5 Pro is, what, one fourth (or less) the cost of a 9800X3D+5070Ti (or better) system. Yeah, PC performance is better, but is it worth the price differential for your kid's system?)
I believe the performance uplift is due to a lack of a process node shrink. They’re like Intel with the 12th-14th generation CPUs on 14+(+)nm node (stuck selling the same thing with more power to force a small overclock out of each generation).

Gonna swing by Microcenter tomorrow afternoon and see if their stock holds up. If there's a 9070XT around at actual MSRP will probably go ahead and grab it. Rocking an RX 7600 that's fine, but feel like I might as well do it now and not worry about it again for quite awhile.

Here is the chart from the Hardware Unboxed review. Thought it might be of some interest or helpful for making a decision IF you have an option or are thinking about targeting a specific card.

XFX: "you know what our fan speed/noise is going to be" and then ASUS does a hold-my-beer thing.

7900XTX Red Devil has a much smaller delta on their hotspots than any 9070 (after they addressed the thermal pad issue).

Those hotspot deltas and mem temps are very concerning.

Well... "accidentally" got a Red Devil OC. Was just sort of clicking on NewEgg and Best Buy. Guess it is time to do a new build.

9070s seem a lot easier to buy although i think OOS on best buy now

no interest in upgrading at the moment but i always thought AMD graphic drivers were ass, are they better now?

Overall they're fine; the "they're ass" is mostly a historical thing. The latest major hiccup with them was RDNA1/RX 5700s.

Blackwell's been having a lot of issues with drivers out of the gate, or so I hear.

Rip, my order just got cancelled due to insufficient stock. Oh well
The markup on the online orders on amazon is insane.

110 USD markup for just being on amazon in some / most cases.

The one XFX card that went up at MSRP was insta gone.

EDIT:

I guess the good part is, if I wanna waltz into Dallas, Microcenter has a ton in stock.

Just a reminder that only stuff on Amazon that says both Ships from and Sold by Amazon.com is Amazon's merchandise - anyone can have their own 'business' and either have their merchandise sitting in Amazon's warehouse or just have Amazon handle the orders, and they can charge whatever they want for anything.

Not that Amazon proper is limited to base models either - I don't consider the Red Devil worth a 33% markup.
